Last season two-part opener,‘No Mercy’ & ‘No Frackin Mercy’ flashback episodes left audiences with a feeling that the writers may have run out of story ideas, because viewers had to wait until episode three to get any answers in regard to the season two cliffhanger. Though that wasn’t the case this season opener, but the episode for the most part leaves you dissatisfied.

The entire premise of last season’s finale, was for Warren (Kellita Smith) and crew to stop Murphy (Keith Allan) from turning everyone into blends who he could control, using his daughter as leverage. However, that went afoul when Zona kidnapped Murphy’s daughter Lucy. Murphy and Warren made a deal and it revolved having Warren getting Lucy back. Warren and crew did find Lucy but were not able to secure her.

The season three finale, ‘Everyone Dies in the End,’ didn’t really live up to its name because, in fact, viewers didn’t actually see anyone die. The fate of those who were shot, those who went over the cliff, and those who were about to be obliterate by Zona, their fates were all left hanging. What we were left with was the unknown fate of almost the entire cast.

Unfortunately, with the fourth season opener, ‘Warren’s Dream,’ viewers got a rather lackluster premiere. Warren has been in a coma for nearly a year at a medical facility in Zona. Murphy is there, too, now hailed as a hero for delivering them a cure. Later viewers discover what all those weird visions Warren was having at the beginning of the episode. She’s been having precognition of what will happen when Zona unleashes its global cleansing in order to eradicate zombie and human alike. The ‘Reset’ as it is called, will be the start of a New World Order under the leadership of Zona’s benefactor The Founder (Michael Berryman).

Warren attempts escape but runs afoul when she discovers she’s on an island, and then gets captured. As Murphy is talking to Warren about her attempted flight, Dr. Howard Teller (Frank Boyd) appears. Teller hasn’t been seen since his capture by Zona in season three’s episode ‘No Mercy’. He tells Murphy and Warren they need to come with him because there is something urgent he needs to show them.

The Z Nation season 4 premiere, ‘Warren’s Dream,’ was more melodrama than balanced with action. It also spent way too much time in Zona, where the script could have been trimmed and given a bit more attention to the other survivors. Yes, we do find out the fates of most of the remaining cast. Along with Murphy and Warren, 10K, Red, Doc, Addy, Dr. Sun Mei, and Lucy are all alive. 5K may or may not have died jumping off the cliff, and the fate of The Man and Citizen Z are still unknown.

Though the show dragged a bit during the Zona scenes, this did not take impact the fine performances of the cast. And with a new season comes new faces for the series. Besides Michael Berryman as The Founder, we are introduced to Lt. Mueller, aptly portrayed by Henry Rollins. Mueller is a Marine in charge of a survivor camp and a man who’s in touch with his feelings, unafraid to dispense hugs to survivors who need them.

Hopefully, the new story arc will pick up some speed and zombie action with the next few episodes.

Z Nation airs Fridays at 9/8c on SyFy.

Review Overview

3.5 out of 5

Summary : A slower episode than should be for a season opener, though viewers are finally introduced to Zona proper. Very little zombie action and only a few scenes outside of the Zona storyline.
