Z Nation Season 3 Premiere Review: No Mercy

Z Nation returns to Syfy with a strong season 3 premiere.

Season 3, Ep. 01 & 02 – ‘No Mercy’ & ‘No Frackin Mercy’ | Aired Sept. 16, 2016

Don’t expect any answers to season two’s cliffhangers. This Z Nation Season 3 Premiere was a flashback episode.

There were a lot of unanswered questions at the end of season two’s cliffhanging episode, ‘All Good Things Must Come to an End’ in regard to the fate of the survival group along with Citizen Z.

Here’s a quick recap: Warren (Kellita Smith), Doc (Russell Hodgkinson), Addy (Anastasia Baranova), and a remorseful Escorpion (Emilio Rivera) were waiting on the beach for Murphy, who had just blown up a submarine. They watch helplessly as Murphy (Keith Allan), Dr. Merch (Lisa Coronado) and the boat’s captain are captured in their lifeboat by Asian soldiers. Meanwhile, 10K (Nat Zang), who was on the submarine for medical treatment is missing, leaving his fate unknown. And let’s not forget Citizen Z (DJ Qualls), who was last seen frozen in the Antarctic wasteland.

If you were expecting to get resolution to all the loose ends, then you will probably be disappointed in this two-hour premiere episode. Either the showrunner/writing father and son team were either daunted by the task of getting into them or they have run out of creative ideas.

Whatever the reason may be, instead of answers we get an episode that is set in middle of season two. We know this because Cassandra (Pisay Pao), who 10K mercied in episode Zombie Baby Daddy, is still alive.

We may be getting more flashback episodes before we find out the fate of Warren and crew. According to an interview for TV Geek Talk in December 2015, showrunner Karl Schaefer had this to say about season 3: “And, we open season 3 with a 2-part episode that will sort of set everything up for the past that will come crashing into season 3.”

Z Nation Season 3 Premiere Zombie Education Alliance

As for the premiere episode, it was a solid outing with alot of zombie action and an introduction of two new mysterious protagonists: The Man (Joseph Gatt) and an undisclosed someone in which only a corpse like arm is revealed. The chronological story of both episodes is about The Man being tasked by the owner of the corpse arm to “collect” a scientist at the Mercy Labs colony, Dr. Harold Teller. It’s during this time that 10K runs across a young boy raised by crows (Holden Goyette), who managed to escape the grasp of The Man, and his sister Red (Natalie Jongjaroenlarp). Both are very enjoyable characters, however the most enjoyable part of the season premiere was to see ZEA’s favorite character, Cassandra (Pisay Pao), return.

First Cassandra was turned into a half-zombie by Murphy, then mid-season 2, 10K mercied her during a violent altercation. It is clear the writers had no idea what to do with Pao’s character after they turned the sexy, zombie ass-kicker into Murphy’s mind controlled girlfriend, except to kill off the character — a disappointment to many fans. We don’t get the zombie killing Cassandra back, but we do get her before she got all crazy and aggressive. We’d love to see more Cassandra, but we’d also love to see the answer to all of season two’s cliffhangers. Hopefully we’ll get both this season.
