If You Didn’t See It Coming, You Should Have!

Fans are shocked, outraged, and angered over the mid-season 8 reveal that Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) had been bitten during the melee that he and Siddiq had against a walker swarm. So outraged are fans in support of the character that an online petition at Change.org has been circulating to save Carl and fire executive producer/show runner Greg Nicotero.
I for one am neutral about the decision to kill off Carl, and knew something was up during the previous week’s episode, “Time For After.” If you view the episode closely, watch the skirmish play out and Carl’s mannerisms at the end. Something is clearly wrong. Add this to the clues in the season 8 premiere episode “Mercy.” Remember Rick mourning graveside and the stain glass Celtic cross? That was major foreshadowing for something devastating yet to come for Rick.
I wasn’t surprised when Carl’s bite mark was revealed. Am I sad to see Carl go? Sure. However, will it effect my viewing habits of the show? No. Except for many fans it maybe the third nail in the coffin for the AMC television series with their loyal viewers.
The Walking Dead has lost many fan favorite characters over the years, none more devastating though as the double whammy of Glenn Reis (Steven Yeun) and Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) at the end of Negan’s bat. However most viewer’s knew Glen and Abraham’s death was inevitable. Both deaths were pivotal in the comic series. However, Carl is still alive in the comic series, so his death on screen has been a devastating blow for many.
Though there is online speculation from fans that Carl’s eminent death is just another Glen under the dumpster cliffhanger, this hopefulness is more than likely misplaced. It is ZEA’s opinion that there is only one possibility for Carl to stay alive without being a ludicrous plot twist. Carl would have to be immune.
Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has often stated that he knows how his comic series as well as the television show will end. However, he has yet to make that reveal. With no end game in sight, is it possible that Kirkman will have Carl immune? This would certainly provide a goal for our survivors. Find some virologists, have Carl’s blood extracted, and produce an antiviral and a vaccine from his blood. However as viewers know from The Walking Dead Mid-season 8 finale, Carl is already showing signs of infection. In addition, Chandler Riggs has revealed his departure in an exclusive interview with the Hollywood Reporter – ‘Walking Dead’ Star Explains the Show’s Biggest Exit Yet.
Although all indications suggest that Carl will die, the final answer to whether he does or not will come when The Walking Dead returns February 25, 2018.
